Oct. 10, 1960 - South Africa to be a Republic. South Africa's Whites only referendum resulted last night in a majority of 73, 980 in favour of a republic. The vote is a triumph for the Premier. Dr. Hendrick Verwoerd who has told voters that the country would remmain in the Commonwealth.
