1964 - A new African nation is born It has been announced today that Tanganyika and the island state of Zanzibar, 22 miles off the coast of Tanganyika have merged to form a new nation which it is reported will be run from the Tanganyikan capital of Dar-Es-Salaam. President Nyerere of Tanganyika paid a surprise visit to Zanzibar, and has signed articles of union with President Abeid Karume who became President three months ago after the revolution had deposed the Sultan at a secret meeting.
