Nov. 11, 1960 - CARTOONS ON SIDE OF HOUSES IN ZANZIBAR - PROTESTING AGAINST INSTALLATION OF U.S. SATELLITE TRACKING STATION: For centuries - International events have had little interest for the natives of Zanzibar. But now that the Americans are constructing a Satellite Tracking Station - complete with radio masts and antenna towers - 15 miles from Zanzibar Town - there have been a number of voices raised in protest. Says the leader of the Zanzibar Nationalist Party Sheikh Ali Muhsin - The Americans assure us that the tracking station is for peaceful purposes - but we are much more concerned that they should convince the Russians of this - for We Don't want to be associated with any satellite espionage'. He claims it should either be pulled down or placed under U.N. control. Sheikh Ali whose relations with Pekin daily become more and more cordial - had his propaganda men work overtime to produce cartoons on sides of houses such as the one pictured here
