Dec. 12, 1964 - Salvaging the Abu Simbel Temple latest stage in the Aswan Dam project.: The mammoth project of salvaging of the Abu Simbel Temple is now well under way and will reach its most decisive stage when the provisional dam surrounding it is completed. The great Temple will then be dissected into 1, 000 blocks of 20 tons each and rebuilt 15000 metres above the original site. The past few weeks caused much tension in the project as the 12, 000 workers 90 engineers and 40 Foreign experts struggled against the unexpected high flood waters of the Nile. The Temple has to be rebuilt before the middle of 1966 when the level of the water in the NASR lake will be reaching 145 metres that is 10 metres higher than the sorrounding £ 2, 500 temporary dam erected around the Temple. First stage of cutting the temple will be the ceiling reached by digging down the top of the mountain with bulldozers. A huge aluminum tunnel has been installed at the tunnel entrance to the Temples to enable workers to continue with their delicate work when the facades are covered with sand. It is intended that the Temple should retain its original appearance when re-erected 1500 feet above its original site.
