May 05, 1966 - Slave Children Rescued from Labor Camp: Thirty two children, who some years ago were snatched from their Kisli villages for enforced labour in the Tanzanian forests, arrived in Nairobi after being repatriated at the request of the Kenya Government, and are on their way to be reunited with their parents, brothers and sisters. Ranging in age from 11 to 19, the boys arrived in Nairobi at the week-end after having been tracked down by the Tanzanian authorities who discovered them in a labor camp near Arusha. The boys were transported to the Kenya border at Namanga, where police collected and brought them to Nairobi. One of the boys described how he had been kidnapped three years ago at Kisli. A man stopped me on the road and promised that if I went with him to Tanzania he would get me into a school and train me as a hotel keeper. His story is similar to that of the other boys. All were promised either more money than they could hope to earn at Kisli, or educational or training facilities not available to them in their home areas. This practice of recruitment has been described as slave labor by the parents of missing sons - a practice which has been going on for many years in the Kisii District of Nyanza Province. The Kenya Government is trying to stamp out this form of illegal recruitment with the co-operation of the Tanzanian authorities.
