May 30, 1967 - Eastern Nigeria Breaks Away: Eastern Nigeria today broke away from the seven-year-old Nigerian Federation and proclaimed itself the sovereign independent republic of Blafra. The announcement of the break came after a weekend of mounting tension with a session of the region and its 14 million people apparently imminent. In a statement in Enugu, the Eastern Government warned of a possible bloody conflict in Nigeria. For months the Eastern Region had talked of secession but, always, at the last moment, the regional governor, Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu, drew back from the fatefull step. Photo Shows: Lt. Col.
