Mar. 03, 1967 - Eastern Nigeria Not Scheding: A statement last night by Eastern Nigeria's Military Governor that his region does not recognize Lieutenant-Colonel Yakubu Cowen as head of Nigeria's military government does not represent any change in the Eastern Region position, official sources said in Enugu today. The Governor, Lieutenant-Colonel Okumegwu Ojukwu, has repeatedly stated that the Eastern Region considers the top military post vacant since this assassination of Major-General Johnson Agulyi-Ironai last year. Colonel Ojukwu's statement, broadcast by Enugu Radio last night, did not mean Eastern Nigeria was seceding from the Federation. Colonel Ojukwu's statement said, At The Aburi meeting (when the Nigeria leaders met in Ghana last January) I made it perfectly clear that the Eastern Region does not recognise Lieutenant-Colonel Gowen as head of the military government because he usurped that position'.
