1970 - Imam killed in attempt to escape: Imam Al Hadi Al Mahdi was killed on (March 31) when trying to escape to Ethiopia after ab attempted revolt against their gime of Major-General Numeiry, Prime Minister and Leader of the Revolutionary Council of the Sudan. General Numeiry said that after the Army had liquidated pockets of resistance on Aba Island, the White Nile stronghold of the Iman and his followers, the Iman asked for time to surrender himself, but instead tried to cross the border into Ehtiopia. Members of the Ansar sect were accused of attempting to assassinate General Numeiry during his visit the previous weak is Aba Island.
