Sep. 12, 1968 - Senghor campaigned from the beginning for African independence efforts, and he worked toward a unity of Africa and reconciliation with Europe. Since Senegal's independence in 1960, he has been the president of the republic. On September 22, 1968 he will receive the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in Frankfurt's Paulskirche
