Dec. 12, 1971 - Several thousand cheering and jubilant people today watched President Nyerere beat a traditional African drum to start the celebrations marking mainland Tanzania's 10th anniversary of independence. The impressive and colourful ceremony took place in Daras-Salaam outside the headquarters of the ruling TANU party. Almost simultaneously a 10-gun salute was fired by a battery of the Tanzania people's Defence Force. Traditional dances, church bells and sirens followed.
