Anniversary celebrations of Tanzania's Independence.: Several thousand cheering and jubilant people watched President Nyerere beat a traditional African drum to start the celebration marking mainland Tanzania's 10th. anniversary of Independence. The impressive and colourful ceremony took place in Dar-es-Salaam outside the headquarters of the ruling Tanu party.Almost simultaneously a 10-gun salute was fired by a battery of the Tanzania People's Defence Force. Traditional dances, church bells and sirens followed.
