Dec. 12, 1971 - 10th. Anniversary celebrations of Tanzania's Independence.: Several thousand cheering and jubilant people watched President Nyerere beat a traditional African drum to start the celebration marking mainland Tanzania's 10th. anniversary of Independence. The impressive and colourful ceremony took place in Dar-es-Salaam outside the headquarters of the ruling Tanu party.Almost simultaneously a 10-gun salute was fired by a battery of the Tanzania People's Defence Force. Traditional dances, church bells and sirens followed. Photo shows Tanzania's President Nyerere signals the start of ten day's celebrations for the 10th. anniversary of mainland Tanzania's independence with ten strokes on the Uhuru ('Freedom') drum - at 10 o'clock in the morning
