Dec. 12, 1969 - President of Dahomey shot.: Dahomey boarded on the east by Nigeria and on the West by Togo, was reported today to have been taken by rebellious army troops led by Chief of Staff Lieut. colonel Maurice Koundete, the man who last tried to grab power in December, 1967, coup. The rebels in the former French West African colony with a population of 3, 000, 000 were said to have stormed the presidential palace and shot the 51-year old president, Dr. Emile Zindsou.
