Jul. 07, 1973 - Rain Brings hope to the Drought Striken Area of West Mali as Thousands Die of Famine. Famine is sweeping across West Africa following the worst drought in living memory in which thousands of nomadic tribesfolk, hit by the ensuing famine, have died - mostly children. In the drought striken area of West Mali, where the R.A.F. are flying in 50 tons of food perday, the town of Nyoro, population about 17, 000 (The Sarakolli tribes) last Friday had a temporary reprieve - Rain!!- much to the delight of the people. But they still need the grain and cereal that make their basic food to meet the current starvation problem. It is seven years since the last monsoon.
