The Portuguese authorities seen less and less able to contain Frelimo, whose success might spell the beginning of the end of White supremacy in Southern Africa Forty-year-old Samora Machel, a forceful military man trained in Guerrilla warfare in Algeria, took over the leadership of Frelimo and command of the 20, 000 strong Mazambique People's Liberation Army, and well-equipped and disciplined force from Dr. Eduarda Mandlane-a brilliant academic turned freedom fighter who was assassinated four years ago just outside the Tanzanian capital of Dar es-Salaam. He was literally torn to pieces when a bomb, concealed in a book, exploded in his face at a secluded beach house in February 1969.
