Jul. 07, 1973 - Rain brings hope to the drought-striken area of West Mali as thousands die of famine: Famine is sweeping across West Africa following the worst drought inliving memory in which thousands of nomadic tribesfolk, hit by the ensuing famine have died - mostly children. In the drought-stricken area of West Mali, where the R.A.F. are flying in 50-tons of food per day, the town of NYORD, population about 17, 000 (the Sarakolli tribe) last Friday had a temporary reprieve - Rain ! - much to the delight of the people, but they still need the grain and cereal starvation problem. It is seven years since the last monsoon. Photo shows following the rainfall, the menfolk, optimistic as ever, begin so sow their third lot of seed this year
