May 01, 1974 - 1st March, 1974 Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia - currently has a unique feature.. although the mutineers have attacked the Government and some of its methods and policies, it seems, at the present time that they are not disloyal to the Head of State, the eighty-one year old Emperor Haile Selassie who has been ruling Ethiopia as Regent and Emperor for over half a century. It seems for the present that the Ethiopians traditional respect and obedience for their Emperor is still greater than their determination to introduce reform. Haile Selassie has accepted the resignation of the Government headed by Prime Minister Alkilou Habte Uolde, and he has acceded in the military's demands for higher pay. It remains to be seen whether the Army and people will accept a new Cabinet under Lij Endalkatchew Makonnen, and whether reform can be implemented quickly enough to satisfy the progressive elements among the rebels. Given the essential conservatism of the Ethiopian people it seems at least possible that the Emporor Haile Selassie can weather this storm as he has so many others in his long and eventful life. Caption to Pictures: These most recent pictures of the Emperor Haile Selassie show him as an old man, but still full of the energy and fire that have enabled him to rule for fifty years over a notoriously unruly people
