Jan. 13, 1977 - January 13th 1977 Instant response to the appeal to save the Acropolis An international appeal for help to save the classical monuments of the Acropolis of Athens threatened by age, pollution and the weather, was launched from the Acropolis itself by Mr. Amadou Mahtar M'Bow, Director General of UNESCO. He said I am launching here a solemn appeal to the conscience of the world so that the Acropolis may be saved as my predecessors appealed for the monuments Nubia and Venice.
