Mar. 03, 1963 - The Girls who work in the Dark.: These girls-there are 31 of them all together-spend their entire working life underground. They are mushroom pickers, and they work in a maze of caves and passages deep under a Wiltshire hillside near Bradford-On-Avon, where limestone used to be quarried The girls work in the special conditions that the mushrooms require - a cool, even temperature, with planty of fresh air, which is constantly pumped into the 26 acres of quarry - and the girls have to work in shifts, as the mushrooms have to be picked seven days a week all the year round. The girls wear miners lamps on their heads to find their way round, and to see what they are doing. Photo shows the photographer uses a car headlight to pierce the darkness where the girls are working packing the mushrooms
