A housewife has beaten the scientists in a race to produce a mini-turkey which tastes as good as a full-sized bird.The turkeys weigh less than 9 pound when they are mature and about 6-poud when they are ready for the oven.The commercial breeders all have intense research programmes employing staffs of scientists under way, but the housewife working alone, has beaten them all without the aid of staff. She is a stockbroker's wife, wife, MRS CARLA Stafford-Lewis, of Ghiddingfold, Surrey, who has been developing her miniature strain under Ministry of Agriculture Supervision for five years. The project to develop the mini-turkey began with three small, freak birds which became the foundation stock for the new strain. Mrs Stafford-Lewis crossed, then re-crossed, the smallest of each progeny. She now has 1, 200 fully-grown mini-turkeys on her farm. Her knowledge of genetics and selective breeding was gained at Cornell University in America.
