Air-sea rescue Whirlwind helicopter demonstration, Kent

Jun. 06, 1971 - Air/Sea rescue helicopter. there was a demonstration today at Manston of the Whirlwind series Ill helicopter for air/sea rescue work, provided by the Department of Trade and Industry. Announcing the Government's decision to provide a helicopter service, Mr. Anthony Grant, Parliamentary under secretary of state, said in reply to a parliamentary question on March 24, 1971; I have decided to provide a civil air/ sea rescue service from Manston for a trial period commencing this summer and continuing until the end of 1972. The helicopter, which will be based at Manston, Kent, will be under the control of HM Coastguard. The Ministry of Defence are providing base facilities at Manston and will assist in the training of the pilots for rescue work.
