Feb. 02, 1954 - Britain's Giant Trop-Jet Crash-Lands In Mud. Race With Tide To Save The Britannia: The giant turbo -prop Britannia, designed to seat 100 people, which flew for the first time on December 23, crashed on the beach at Littlet-on-Severn today. The pilot, Bill Pegg, and all but one of the test crew of 12 escaped without injury. Engineers from the Bristol Aeroplane Co. with winches and hausers are working feverishly to get the airliner of the firm ground before the high tide.
