May 05, 1953 - British Canberra jet bomber sets up new world altitude record of over twelve miles. It has just been officially announced that the British Canberra jet Bomber, powered by two Bristol Olympus turbo - jet engines, and piloted by Ming Commander W.F. Gibb D.S.O. D.F.C. - on may 4th. Set up a new world altitude record for class C. aeroplanes. Observed by officials of the Royal Aero Club and the Federation Aeronatique Internationale - the Olympia Canberra took of from Filton Aerodrome and 14.32 hrs. and landed again at 15.33 hrs after cresting a new record of over 12 miles in height.
