Aug. 08, 1954 - Press visit to the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment: Members of the Press today went to the Aeroplane and Armament Experiments Establishment at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire which is the Ministry of Supply's official testing centre. It is here that all the new aeroplanes intended for the fighting services their armament, and much of the equipment fitted in them, are tested to determine how well they will do the task for which they have been designed. Photo shows a Blower Tunnel for pro-flight testing of safety devices seen being demonstrated today. The Blower Tunnel creates a wind-speed of 250 m.p.h. and at this point the hood is automatically released from the cockpit of a Vatican Aircraft, and its behaviour noted to test that it does not foul the aircraft
