Aircraft - Aviation - Balloons - Helicopters

Mar. 03, 1954 - New French Freight and Passenger Aircraft on show. The Hurel Dubois aspect ratio machine The Hurel Dubois high aspect ratio aircraft was to be seen at Shoreham Airport, Sussex, this afternoon, on display by the Miles Organization. It is an entirely new approach to low-cost air transport. It is designed for freightage over 500 to 2, 000 Km. It is of all metal construction and is powered with Pratt and Whitney R.1830 engines and the aircraft has a fixed landing gear. It is fitted with huge removable outer wings, each having a span of 18.65 metres. Each outer wing consists of a trapezoidal section with a length of 10.50 metres. The latter has a few degrees washout to improve the stalling characteristics of the aircraft. The aircraft is equipped for transportation of either freight only or passengers and freight. As many as 44 passengers can be carried. The machine is considered particularly suitable for landing and taking-off from areas where ground installations have been inadequately developed. Keystone Photo Shows: Unusual angle looking up at one of the huge wings of the unique aircraft when shown at Shoreham for the first time in this country. Each wing has a span of 18.65 metres.
