Sep. 09, 1954 - Britania Flies Off To North Africa On Tropical Trials: The prototype of the world's biggest prop jet airliner, the British Britannia, took off from Filton, Bristol, today to fly to Idris, Tripoletania, Nort Africa, for hot weather trials. The aircraft was making its first flight overseas. It is flying direct to Idris and was expected to complete the 1, 600 mile journey in four and a half hours. the hot weather tests extending over twelve days are the first phase of tropical trials which form part of the aircrafts certificate of airworthiness programme.
