Mar. 03, 1955 - Giant Turbo-Prop Warms Up For Debut: The British Bristol Britannia, giant turbo-prop airliner being built for British Overseas Airways, is due on the international air route this year. Powered by four Proteus propeller turbine, the Britannia will be the first really big turbo-propeller airliner - a plane powered by a gas stream passing through a rotary turbine which drives a shaft geared to a propeller - ti go into regular service. Photo Shows The Britannia flashes over the runway at Filton Airport, England at the start at her 6, 070-mile fight to Johannesburg, South Africa for tropical trials. The 100-passengers liner covered the distance in about 17 1/2 hours, with one stop-over at Khartoum, Anglo-Egyptian Sudan
