May 05, 1955 - Supersonic Bug: First British plane to top the speed of sound in level flight is the English Electric P-1 interceptor fighter. Since it began flying last August the prototype of this aircraft has made over 100 flights, mostly at super-sonic speeds. To step up testing, Britain's Ministry of Supply has ordered 20 pre-production models so that different tests can be carried on at the same time.
