Sep. 09, 1956 - Preview Of Farnborough Air Show Flying Display.. Avro Vulcan Loops And Rolls: Four split second pictures - taken by high speed cameras - at an Avro Vulcan V Bomber loops and rolls. Test pilot Jimmy Harrison takes the 50 ton bomber straight up from his take-off run into the loop. The four jet engines, blasting at full power, give the huge nuclear machine 32 tons of thrust, as seen in Top - left picture - while top right :- the machine goes straight up like a rocket - preparing to turn over at top of the loop - It is just past the point at which it could toss out an H bomb at low level on to the target. Bottom Left:- Upside down -at top of the loop the Vulcan begins to drop one wing to roll into level flight. and Bottom Right:- the Vulcan has nearly completed its roll only about 500ft. above the ground. The pilot is holding the the nose well down in a shallow dive to gain speed. The whole manoeuvre is called Immelmann turn, after the World War 1 German fighter ace who invented it
