1957 - Short Stop Named VTOL A British vertical take off and landing plane, the Short SCL, named VTOL (vertical take off and landing), took to the air recently. Using only th normal take off technique, the aircraft was tested in forward fligt and remained airborne for 15 minutes. Development will continue for some time before unrestricted vertical take off and change over from hovering to forward are tried. The Short SCL is powered by five Rolls Royce turbo jet engines. Picture shows: slowed down by its parachute brake, the Short SCL lands on the runway at the British Ministry of Supply's aircraft establishment at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire, England after its maiden flight
