1957 - Whispering giant warms up. Britain's newest airliner the Bristol Britannia, known as the whispering Giant, is being fitted with new electrical heater elements to keep ice from forming on the fin and tailplane units. Known as Spraymat, the de icing system consists of flame sprayed metal elements snadwiched between layers of insulting material. The 100 passenger turbo prop was recently introduced on the London Australia route by British overseas Airways, and five have been ordered by America's Northeast Airlines. Picture shows The special rig for mechanically spraying the elements of the Britannia tail unit heater. A tailplane leading edge heater element is complete on the rig
