Aug. 30, 1957 - 30.8.57 New Aeroplane Altitude Record, 70, 000 feet with rocket engine Anew international altitude record for aeroplanes of 70, 000 feet (21, 336 metres), has been set up subject to official confirmation, by the chief test pilot and deputy chief engineer of the British engine company of D. Napier and Son, Ltd. This new record for Great Britain was made while they were flying in a Canberra aircraft fitted with the a Napier Double Scorpion rocket engine. The pilot was Mr. Mike Randrup and with him was Mr. Walter Shirley. The record height was reached on August 28th, and was part of the rocket engine test programme which is being done under Ministry of Supply contract.
