1958 - The Comet IV - World's First fully developed jet Airliner: Test flights are now being made in the new Comet IV for the first time since the disasters which put an end to the fist Comets career four years ago. The new machine is 111ft. long hair as big again and twice as powerful as its predecessor and has a wing span of 1154ft. She is powered with four Rolls Royce Aol RA 29 Mark 524 engines, each of 10, 500 lb. thrust. She is designed to carry 56 - 76 passengers on stages of up to 3, 000 miles. During tests she is piloted by Group Captain John Cat's Eyes Cunningham. Photo shows the Comet IV takes off on test flight at Hatfield today
