Feb. 02, 1958 - Single-Engine Aircraft Crosses Antarctic Continent: A de Havilland Otter of the British Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition has become the first single-engine aircraft to cross the ice continent. It flew last month from the expedition's base at South Ice to the Scott Base on the other side of Antartica. The United States is among the six countries who are using Canadian-built de Havilland aircraft in Antarctica during the International Geophysical Year.
