May 05, 1956 - French Birdman Dives to his death. Parachute fails to open in air display: Leo Valentin the famous French Birdman fell to his death 8, 500 feet when taking part in an air display in aid of charity at Liverpool yesterday. He was to have glided to within 3, 000 feet of the ground using his wooden wings in a birdlike action. When leaving the plane his wings struck the Fuselage his parachute candled and his reserve parachute failed to open. Photo shows Leo Valentin waves to the onlookers before taking off on what proved to be his last flight at Liverpool yesterday
