Aug. 15, 1958 - The Short S.C. 1 Vertical Take Off Aircraft Undergoes Tests In Belfast: The Short SC. 1 V.T.O.L. research aircraft the jet-powered vertical take-of aircraft project has begun untethered hovering trials in its test gantry at Belfast. During the past few days the machine has made acme 20 take-offs to a height of several fest and has hovered and landed under complete control. The Company's chief test pilot Mr. T. Brooke-Smith was at the controls. The aircraft rises and descends entirely under the power of its vertical lift - and the cable system does not in any way assist it.
