Feb. 26 The Republic F-105 Thunderchief: Long-Range, Supersonic, Nuclear-Weapons-Carrying Fighter Power In Motion: Sparkling in the bright sunlight high above the earth is the U.S Air Force's newest, most powerful fighter-bomber, the highly supersonic F-105 Thunderchief, designed and built by Republic Aviation Corporation of Farmingdale, N.Y. The nuclear-weapons-carrying aircraft is a single-seat craft which can reach speeds well above Mach 1 (the speed of sound). it has a wing span of over 30 feet and overall length in excess of 60 feet. The Thunderchief's area rule ('Coke bottle shaped) fuselage houses one Pratt and Whitney J-75 turbojet engine with afterburner. The J-75, a 15-000-pound-thrust engine (more powerful with afterburner) is the free world's most powerful jet engine. Other Thunderchief design features include a one-piece flying tail, a ventral fin on the bottom of the aft fuselage for greater stability at high speeds, swept-back air intake ducts which permit electronic and radar equipment to be installed in the needle nose. The F-105 is slated for service with USAF's Tactical Air Command
