Feb. 26 The Republic F-105 Thunderchief World's Most Powerful Fighter-Bomber New, deadly weapon is this supersonic F-105 Thunderchief fighter-bomber, built for the U.S. Air Force by Republic Aviation Corporation, Farmingdale, L.I. N.Y. The new Century Series fighter was developed as a complete weapons system and can carry heavy loads of nuclear or conventional weapons internally or externally over great distances at much faster-than-sound speeds. Powered by one Pratt and Whitney J-75 turbojet engine developing 15, 000 pounds of thrust, not counting the added power of its afterburner, the single-seat F-105 has been called the world's mightiest fighter-bomber. Slated for service with the USAF Tactical Air Command, the Thunderchief has some unique design features such as swept-forward air-intake ducts located at the wing roots which inhale air at tremendous speeds without choking the engine with supersonic shock waves; an area rule or coke bottle shaped fuselage; a ventral fin on the bottom of the aft fuselage for greater stability; a one-piece flying tail and radically different clover-leaf speed brakes that form the last 36 inches of the fuselage when closed and unfold like the petals of a blossoming flower when braking in flight.
