Feb. 26 Europe's Most Up-To-Date Wind Tunnels. Mach 4 Construction At Warton - Lancashire.: What are termed to be the most modern Wind Tunnels - are being inaugurated at Warton Aerodrome Lancashire, by the Minister of Aviation - Mr. Peter Thorneycroft M.P. The tunnels cost ?750, 000 and have been built by the English Electric Aviation and are capable of flying models of aircraft and missiles at up to six times the speed of sound - about 4, 500 m.p.h..The tunnels are the latest equipment addition to facilities at Warton - which in the past four years have cost more than ?4, 000, 000 - making the aerodrome one of the finest aircraft development centres in the world. There are two tunnels - one 4 ft. for speeds from Mach 0.4 to Mach 4 - and the 18 in tunnel for speeds from Mach 1.5 to Mach 6.0 - and are said to meet the requirements of the next generations of aircraft and winged missiles - and also cover re-en conditions for certain ballistic missiles. The main power plant consists of two 820 hp. electric motors.
