Aug. 08, 1955 - Turboprop Passes TV Screen Test: Through the use of television, de-icing teats on the engine of the new British Bristol Britannia giant turboprop airliner have been finished in one-tenth the usual time. technicians were able to watch the tests as a small Pye television camera, mounted in the port engine nacelle, relayed pictures to a 14 in.screen inside the test aircraft. The tests, part of the program for the Britannian's Certificcate of Airworthiness, showed the engine to be virtually immune from the effects of the ice. Photo shows. TOP: The Bristol Proteus turboprop engine after ice was allowed to form for a half hour to show the severity of the test. In normal operating, use of the anti-icing system would prevent this. Bottom: The Proteus-Ambassador flying test-bed used to observe the tests on the Britannia engine. The framework attached to the fuselage supports the water-spray grid used to create icing conditions
