Feb. 28 Edit Sky-dives into History: A 60 year old Staffordshire woman has made a record plunge into history. Edith Summers of Tamworth has every reason to believe that she is the oldest female sky-diver on either side of the Atlantic - certainly no one has come forward to challenge her extraordinary title. At an age when most women are thingking of retiring and devoting more time to more mundane hobbies. Edith has wholly devoted herself to the unequalled thrill of launching herself into thin air from a light aircraft at 7, 000 ft and delaying the ripcord pull for about 20 seconds. Edith, a roburst figure whose fitness belies her age, took up the challenge only four years ago after her beloved husband died and she felt the need of a new interest to fill her time. Now she has completed her 100th jump from a nearby airfield in Notthinghamshire. Our intrepid photographer took off with Edith one sunny Saturday recently to make this photographic record of remarkable progress, although she still remembers vividly an unfortunate early jump when she landed in a farm dung heap and sank up to her waist in the manure. But now she's moved onto higher things. After her 100th jump, her current plans include jumping in her native Switzerland onto an Alpine pnak, followed by a trip to the USA for further free fall thrills.
