Feb. 26 The United States Army are making an evaluation study of the Fairey Ultra Light helicopter to assess the possibility of its meeting their requirements for a light two-seater helicopter. In these negotiations with the U.S. Army the Fairey Aviation company is being represented by the Piasecki Aircraft Corporation, of Philadelphia, Pa. Designed primarily for Army obervation and run-about duties, the Ultra Light has a unique propulsive system of pressure jots at the rotor blade tips, which gives it a faster rate of climb than any other helicopter in the world. This is the simplest possible means of driving a rotating wing and eliminates not only such mechanical complications as gears, clutches not only such mechanical complications as gears, clutches and shafts but also the necessity for the usual anti-torque rotor on the tail. The Ultra Light is light in weight (1, 800 lb. all up), rugged in construction, simple to fly and maintain. It has a maximum speed of 105m.p.h and will cruise at 85 m.p.h. It can be carried complete with pilot, fuel, spares and provisions on a standard British Army 3-ton truck which also functions as a deck for landing and take-off forming a completely self efficient mobile unit. With porter bars inserted in the undercarriage cross-tubes it can be moved by four me. Apart from the tiny helicopter's military role, a commercial sales programme is intended for such applications as high-altitude surveying, communications, crop-spraying, transport of light loads in undeveloped and mountainous areas and the multifarious other duties for which the light helicopter is ideally used.
