Mar. 22 New British Adjustable wing research aircraft.: Britain's latest swept-back wing research aircraft, seen in this picture, first details of which can now be revealed, made its first flight at Dec. 2nd. It was piloted by Tom Brooke-Smith, Chief Test Pilot of its designer and manufacturer, Short Brothers and Harland Limited of Belfast. The aircraft, which carries a crew of one, is called the short S.B./5 and is powered by a single Rolls Royce Derwent turbo-jet engine. Designed by David Keith-Lucas, B.A. Mi.I. Mech. E. F.R.A.S. Chief Designer of Short Bros, at the requests of the Ministry of Supply, for investigation to low speed characteristics of swept-back wings, the S.B./5 is the only aircraft in the country with a cho9rd sweep-back of as much as 50n degrees. Another interesting feature of the aircraft is the extremely thin wing, which can be adjusted to varying degrees of swept-back for different experiments. The S.B./5 is the first aircraft to come from the Keith-Lucas team of Designers great interest recently by his lecture to the British Association in Belfast on The Shape of Wings to Come
