Mar. 27 Pilots Check-out New Emergency Pressure Suit Designed For Flying In The Near Vacuum Of Heights: A.M. Tex Johnston (second from left) test pilot, inflates his new U.S. Air Force high altitude emergency suit in a pressure test prior to taking a B-52 aloft. Awaiting his turn is Art Curen, test pilot who will serve as an observer in the flight helping Johnson adjust controls of the suit is Major D.J. Machine (for left) while Lieut. Col. Huy M. Townsend laces Gurren's suit suit. The suit was developed to enable flyers to survivable in the near vacuum of the upper atmosphere should their cabin pressurization system fail. High pressure breathing oxygen is forced through the suit's helmet into the flyer's lungs while at the same time a new and unique mthod of applying body counter pressure is exerted to protect the pilot from collapse. The suit's pressure helmet is equiped with heating elements in its detachable face plate to prevent fogging and has a built - in microphone so that normal communications can be maintained between cew members during flight.
