May 05, 1960 - Pressure on the Nose: The nose section of the Airco D.H. 121 a new short haul jet airliner, undergoing static and fatigue pressure testing in a water tank in the de Havilland plant at Hatfield, England. At the time of the picture taking the section had just completed its first test at 11 lb. per square inch, 1-1/3 times the normal working cabin pressure. Now in progress is a test representing 40, 000 flights of 1 1/2 hours duration equivalent to 60, 000 flying hours or about 20 years of service. Powered by three Rolls-Royce by pass jest, rear mounted, one at the top of the fuselage, the new aircraft will carry 80-100 passengers on stage lengths of about 1, 200 at over 600 m.p.h. and an initial contract for 24 has been placed by a British carrier
