May 05, 1960 - Latest American Aircraft on Show at U.S.A.F. base Bentwaters - near Ipswich; Some of the newer types of aircraft of the United States Air Force were to be seen on display at the U.S.A.F. Base, Bentwaters, near Ipswich - during the week end - as part of the American Armed Forces Day celebration. Photo Shows View of the Lockheed F-1040 Starfighter - the 1, 400 miles an hour plus fighter which weighs only 17, 000 pounds which is less than any other fighter of the U.S.A.F. It is 59ft. long and has as long needle like nose and wing span of only 21ft. 11 inches. The Starfighter is armed with a 20 mm, multi barrel cannon and is capable of firing rockets and missiles. The single seater ultrasonic fighter is powered with a single general Electric J-79 axial flow turbo jet engine with after burner. The Starfighter recently set up a new altitude record of 103, 395.5 feet. It also set up a new world time to climb record for 30, 000 meters by reaching the 98.424 mark in 15 min. 5.29 secs.
