Jan. 25, 1960 - Ancient and Modern.. Fifty Years of Aviation.. The Boxkite - and the Bristol Britannia.. The famous Bristol Aeroplane Company celebrates its fiftieth anniversary on Feb. 19th 1960. The Company produced its first aircraft in 1910 - little more than six years after the Wright Brothers had achieved their epoch making flight at Kittyhawk. The first Bristol aircraft the Boxkite Biplane was in production a few months after formation. A Boxkite had the distinction of making the first military flight in history when, in September 1910, it was used in a reconnaissance role in British Army maneouvres on Salisbury Plain.
