Feb. 02, 1960 - 1, 500 Mph Steel Aircraft Takes Shape. The Bristol Type 188, stainless steel, welded, research aircraft, designed to fly at 1, 500 Mph, under construction at Filton, England. Due to begin tests this year, the single seat 188 will be powered by two De Havilland Gyron, reheated, turbo jet engines and intended for the investigation of the problems of high speed flight in which heat plays a great part. Entirely new techniques have been evolved for its construction which will give it, since it will take off as a conventional aircraft, what the designers hope will be a greater speed range than any aircraft now flying
