All R.A.F. fighter and training stations flying jet aircraft are to be equipped with safety barriers at the end of the runways. The barriers are Swedish-designed and are known as the Safeland - and hav e already saved more than half the cost of the total outlay - estimated at about £800, 000. the Safeland consists of a large net stretched across the end of the runway on the overshoot area - from ed by a series of twin nylon ropes hanging down. Drums of coiled steel wire form the restraining mechanism. When an aircraft engages the net, the ropes are carried forward by the air crafts moomnetumup to a gradual stop. The equivalent can be used with jet aircraft up to the size of the Canberra - Javelin or lightning which it can bring to a stop from speeds of up to 85 mph.
