Oct. 10, 1961 - Air Wall Rider: At South Marston, England, chief test pilot L.R. Colquohoun demonstrates a new British research hovercraft, the Vickers VA-1, claimed by its makers fundamentally different in shape from previous hovercrafts. Capable of remaining stationary, gliding slowly and reaching a speed up to 40 m.p.h. the VA-1 uses an air wall pumped out under its edges to contain the main, central lifting thrust, thus saving power, increasing the hover-height and reducing spray over water.
