1962 - Maiden Flight for 2, 000 mph Jet: Britain's 2, 000 mph stainless steel aircraft, the Bristol 188, piloted by Godfrey Auty, 42, made its maiden flight today from Filton, Bristol, to Boscombo, Down, where is is to be flight tested. The craft is solely for research into the heat barrier problems at high speeds. Photo shows the pilot, Mr. Auty, holds a model of the Bristol 1888 at a Press Conference in London this afternoon after the maiden flight today
